Bartholomew County election officials are reporting that 8,001 residents cast ballots between 6 a.m. when the polls opened until noon today. Voting continues until 6 p.m. or until every voter in line has a chance to vote.
Bartholomew County Clerk Jay Phelps reported 11,749 voters cast their ballots in early voting.
“At this time, I have no doubt that we will set a midterm election turnout record today,” Phelps said Tuesday morning, where he was monitoring the vote centers at the Bartholomew County Courthouse.
“I’ve been to several vote centers throughout the city. ‘ Not one of them has had an empty machine. It’s been steady and nonstop. This has prompted us to set up an additional six machines at several locations, due to the overflow. A lot of lines and a lot of excitement. When we mention to folks that other vote centers may have shorter lines, most tell us they want to stay where they are,” Phelps said.
Donner Center and Grace Lutheran Church were at the top of the vote center turnout list this morning — The church reported 782 voters and Donner had 735.
Other busy vote centers were Flintwood Wesleyan Church with 631 voters, St. John’s Masonic Lodge with 614 voters and the German Township Fire Station at 584 voters.
