John Sluys wasn’t in position to make the Indiana All-Star cross-country team after finishing 22nd in the state meet.
But after several seniors who finished ahead of the Columbus North senior opted not to run in the Mideast All-Star Meet, Sluys got his chance.
Sluys, who led the Bull Dogs to a sixth-place team finish, was the 16th senior to finish the boys race at state. The top 10 seniors are selected for the Mideast meet.
Meanwhile, Rick Sluder, who just completed his first year as the North girls cross-country coach, will serve as one of the assistants for the Indiana team.
This year’s meet will be Nov. 17 at Indian Riffle Park in Kettering, Ohio. The event, which has been held annually since 1987, features the top seniors from Indiana, Ohio and Illinois.
Sluys is the 25th North runner (13 boys and 12 girls) to be selected to compete in the Mideast All-Star meet and the first since Rachel Brougher in 2016. The last Bull Dog boys to be selected were Andrew Diehn, Christopher Kelsey and Michael Sublette in 2011.
