East falls in opener

BLOOMINGTON — Columbus East matched Bloomington North with six event wins in Saturday morning’s season opener, but the Cougars had a little more depth in posting a 108-78 victory.

Karissa Miller won the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 10.69 seconds, Ellie Proffitt took the 50 freestyle in 26.33, Chloe McDonald captured the diving competition with 139.35 points and Maggie Johnson won the 500 freestyle in 5:39.37 for the Olympians.

East’s Miller, Johnson, Marin Wieneke and Jennifer Utterback took the 200 medley relay in 1:58.86. Johnson, Proffitt, Miller and Utterback captured the 400 freestyle relay in 4:01.40.

Columbus Christian wins

MEDORA — Columbus Christian beat Medora for the second consecutive Saturday, this time by a 30-25 score on the Hornets’ home floor.

Madison Henderson led the Crusaders (2-1) with 12 points and added eight rebounds. Kayla Jones added eight points, eight rebounds and 10 steals, and Kaitlyn Conrad had 12 rebounds.

Panthers post win, loss

Jennings County had its hands full with Class 3A No. 3 Salem Saturday in a 57-33 loss.

On Friday, the Panthers (2-1) overcame a 14-5 deficit after one quarter to rally for a 62-46 win against Scottsburg. Kylee Matern led Jennings with 19 points, while Addyson Kent scored 14 and Callie Wilder added 13.

South Decatur splits

South Decatur was within four points of Class A No. 10 Morristown midway through the second quarter Saturday, but the Yellow Jackets pulled away for a 75-48 Mid-Hoosier Conference win.

Madison Owens led the Cougars (1-4, 0-2) with 14 points. Sierra Lang added 12.

South Decatur was coming off a 48-42 win Friday at Rising Sun. Owens led the Cougars with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Annie Gant added 11 points.

Cougars edge Eagles

BLOOMINGTON — Brown County had a couple chances to win in the closing seconds, but couldn’t convert, and Bloomington South held on Friday for a 46-45 win.

Allison Stogsdill led the Eagles (1-1) with 20 points. Gracie Matlock added 12.
