Deputies make arrest in jail battery case

One of nine people arrested earlier this month on charges related to involvement in the Aryan Brotherhood has been arrested on an additional felony charge related to a battery in the jail.

Jarred A. Parton, 26, Franklin, who has been held at the Bartholomew County Jail on charges of felony criminal gang activity and misdemeanor battery, was charged on Wednesday with an additional felony count of Level 5 battery resulting in serious bodily injury. An additional $75,000 bond has been added on to an earlier bond set at $326,000, deputies said.

Parton is accused of punching an inmate in the nose at the jail on Nov. 15, said Sheriff Matt Myers. Parton is being held in lockdown in a separate part of the jail and does not have contact with other inmates, Myers said.

The victim has a broken nose and will need surgery, Myers said. He is being held in the medical unit of the jail in protective custody.

Detective Jason Williams determined Parton and another inmate, who was not the battery victim, were arguing over property, believed to be juice boxes. Some racial remarks were made in that exchange and Parton is accused of hitting the victim for an unknown reason, Myers said.

The victim had nothing to do with the argument or the juice boxes, and was at the wrong place at the wrong time, Myers said.

Myers warned that if deputies determine there is any gang-related activity in the jail, it will be dealt with and inmates who are involved will be charged to the full extent of the law.

“I am not going to tolerate gang members coming in and trying to run the jail,” Myers said. “These inmates will be charged and locked down in solitary until disposition of their cases.”

Myers said Williams did a good job investigating the incident because most times there is little cooperation among inmates to provide information about incidents.
