Icy road conditions contributing factor in Southern Crossing accident

One person was injured after icy road conditions contributed to a two-vehicle accident on the Southern Crossing bridge.

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to the bridge at 6:47 p.m. Monday, deputies said.

A 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Austin Smith, 20, Columbus, was traveling east on Southern Crossing when he lost control of the vehicle on the ice-covered roadway and crossed into the westbound lane, deputies said.

A 2000 Ford Focus, driven by Arron Lee, 25, Columbus, was traveling west and collided with the passenger side of the truck, deputies said. The truck hit the guardrail and rolled over before stopping in the westbound lane, deputies said.

Smith said he was not injured and refused medical treatment. Lee was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital.

Southern Crossing was closed for more than an hour while Bartholomew County Highway trucks treated the roadway surface.
