Icy conditions for morning commute: U.S. 31 reopens

Icy conditions are affecting Thursday’s morning commute.

Three slide-offs occurred at U.S. 31 and Lowell Road on the north side of Columbus shortly after 6 a.m. today.

U.S. 31 at the bridge over Indianapolis Road was closed briefly Thursday morning due to ice on the roads and the accidents that occurred there, but reopened by 7:23 a.m., according to the Bartholomew County 911 Emergency Operations Center.

As of 3:54 a.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service in Indianapolis was forecasting for patchy freezing drizzle for the early part of the morning for areas of central Indiana, including Columbus. Freezing rain and drizzle was expected as well as a brief period with sleet and light snow.

While precipitation amounts will only be a couple hundredths of an inch at most, these amounts may cause icy conditions with subfreezing surface and road temperatures expected through mid morning, the weather service reported.

The icing threat will diminish by late morning as light precipitation changes to all rain, the weather service said.
