North wrestling falls to Edgewood

The Columbus North wrestling team picked up three wins on Wednesday night during its match with Edgewood, but it was all Mustangs in the other matches.

The Bull Dogs were outmatched as they fell in their home opener 62-18.

"Edgewood is always tough and they have a very solid program over there," said North coach Matt Joyce. "We’re building here. I think we had some highlights and then we had our ups and downs."

The Bull Dogs’ Morgan Smith scored a first period fall against Edgewood’s Riley Austin at 113 (pounds), Bradley Gutierrez scored another fall for North in the second period when he defeated the Mustangs’ Kyle Goble at 285 and Yadiel Reyes scored the other Bull Dog points in the match with a first period fall against Edgewood’s Morley Klick at 195.

"They’ve been consistently very hard workers in the weight room and that is kind of an expectation," Joyce said. "Reyes is one of those guys that shows up everyday and always ready to work. The same goes for Morgan and Bradley, those guys are ready to work."

The Mustangs claimed victories in the rest of the matches. For North, Josh Nelson fell in his match at 106 by an 11-1 major decision. Gumaro Guzman lost at 120 by fall in the first period. Ashton Clark lost at 126 by fall in the second period.

At 132, Luis Cardova was defeated via a 12-2 major decision. Bryce Abner was defeated via fall in the second period at 138. Connor Essick lost by a 7-4 decision at 145. Jared Slocum was defeated by fall in the first period at 152. Demtri Bailey lost by fall in the first period at 160.

The closest match happened at 170 where Nick Holt lost in overtime by a 12-8 decision to Edgewood’s Matthew Archer. At 182, Hector De Dios lost in the second round by fall and the Bull Dogs lost at 220 via forfeit.

"We got a lot of new, a lot of young wrestlers that are just figuring things out right now," Joyce said. "I think if we can keep them in good position and we can keep them open and up and not let them clam up out here, I think we are going to be in some good spots come conference and sectional time."
