GREENSBURG
Mary F. Gommel, 91, of Greensburg passed away on December 5, 2018 at Morning Breeze. She was born on November 8, 1927, in Decatur County, the daughter of Ira N. and Bessie Kelley Woodruff.
Mary was the Valedictorian of her class and she graduated from Burney High School in 1944. After her marriage to Warren Gommel in Hartsville, IN July 26, 1946, Mary and her new husband lived in Columbus, IN for a few years. Eventually they relocated in Decatur Co., IN where they took up residence in the farm house built by Mary’s great-grandfather Nathan Woodruff.
The couple modernized the house, but were able to retain the charm of the original structure. Warren preceded her in death on May 23, 1991. Mary worked at Hooks Pharmacy, in Greensburg, for 22 years, she retired in 1986. The Gommels were active members of Union Presbyterian Church in Forest Hill, IN until that congregation was dissolved and then became members of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg. Warren and Mary were the parents of two sons.
Survivors include: Sons- Steven (Becky) Gommel of Vallonia and Mike Gommel of Greensburg; Granddaughter- Erin Gommel of Brownstown; and Grandson- Micah (Stephanie) Gommel of Seymour.
She was preceded in death by her Father- Ira N. Woodruff; Mother- Bessie Frances Woodruff; Husband Warren Gommel; and Sister- Ruth Evelyn Loyd.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home on Monday, December 10, 2018 from 10:00 am until the time of the Funeral at 12:00 noon. Rev. Bob McAulay and Rev. Dr. Wally Wilson will be officiating. Burial will follow at the South Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg.
