A fundraising chili supper for Karen McCaa’s future treatment at the Mayo Clinic will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Columbus North High School cafeteria, before the Columbus East at North boys basketball game.
McCaa is a 1989 North graduate, the school’s fifth all-time girls basketball scoring leader and a former Indiana All-Star. She has most recently served as a volunteer assistant girls basketball coach at North, a motivational speaker and sports psychologist for the North football, girls basketball and volleyball teams.
McCaa was able to attend most of the Bull Dogs football games and several practices this fall. But because of a most recent health setback, she has been unable to attend any of the North girls basketball games this season.
Because she is unable to work, she has limited means to cover mounting medical bills, said Amy Hammons, the fundraiser organizer.

McCaa has battled Lyme disease and other ailments for eight years, enduring numerous surgeries, countless trips to the emergency room, several medications and other challenges. She has spoken extensively — and with considerable optimism and determination — about her health struggles in interviews the past few years with The Republic.
Friday’s donate-any-amount event is a team effort among some of the school’s moms connected with a variety of North athletes. A Facebook Go Fund Me account was just launched with a $20,000 goal.
