Quick takes – December 15th

Helpful program

On Sunday, 150 area children received a boost during the holiday season though the Shop with a Cop program, which allowed them to receive essential items, such as clothes, as well as toys worth in excess of $30,000. It made for a brighter holiday for the children than they might have otherwise.

The longtime program, organized by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 89, draws volunteer law enforcement officers representing a range of agencies who want children to have a good experience with law enforcement.

It’s a valuable resource for many families, and worth the continued support it receives from the community.

Nice additions

Two iconic homes of industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller’s life are popular attractions for residents and visitors who want to see the architecture, interior decorations and gardens. But adding special holiday tours for the homes on Fifth Street and Highland Way have offered welcome new experiences.

The Christmas at Miller House Tour, which has already sold out its planned dates, allows visitors to see the Modern masterpiece at night and with outdoor trees illuminated and Christmas decorations. The Inn at Irwin Gardens Winter Tour allows residents to see the Edwardian-era home, built in 1864, decorated for the holiday.

These are welcome additions, making the lineup of tours even richer.

Motivated students

When Clifty Creek Elementary students were challenged by Principal Michael Parsons to choose a project to benefit school, they came through in a big way.

Sixty-three fifth-graders have collaborated to create a design for a revamped courtyard space, which will be implemented in the spring. The current courtyard isn’t being used regularly by teachers and students because it hasn’t been maintained.

The new-look courtyard will feature a colorful mural, colored canopies and grass that replaces small rocks. An overgrown tree will be removed. Kudos to the students for their efforts to make their school better.
