Hope man arrested on intoxication charge

A near-miss accident led to a Hope man’s arrest on intoxication and drug-related charges.

At about 8:20 p.m. Friday, Columbus Police Department officers stopped the Dustin R. Chaney, 25, of Hope, near 15th and Washington streets after he nearly struck another vehicle on U.S. 31 near 25th Street, said Lt. Matt Harris, CPD public information officer.

The officers noted that Chaney was having difficulty following directions and appeared to be under the influence of an unknown intoxicant, Harris said.

Chaney exited his truck and the officers administered several field sobriety exercises. He was later transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for a blood test. At the conclusion of the test, police arrested Chaney, Harris said.

Prior to towing Chaney’s vehicle, officers located a bag containing synthetic marijuana, Harris said.

Chaney was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail and booked on preliminary charges:

  • Operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated
  • Possession of a synthetic drug
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Chaney was released on $5,000, according to jail officials.
