Woman injured in single-vehicle accident on Christmas

A local woman was transported by helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital after a single-vehicle accident in the area of County Road 300S and Crossing Lane.

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies said Debra Jean Stephens, 62, Columbus, was driving east on County Road 300S at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when her 2011 Chevrolet Equinox left the roadway, went through a chain-link fence and hit an embankment along I-65.

The car became engulfed in flames, deputies said. A passerby pulled Stephens from the burning vehicle.

Stephens was airlifted to Eskenazi Hospital, Indianapolis and is being treated in the hospital’s burn unit, deputies said.
