Market-rate apartment complex planned for former church building

An upscale, market-rate apartment complex will spring from a 96-year-old building that had long served as a Columbus church.

The Home Avenue Apartments project at 1703 Home Avenue has received approval to move forward at the former site of Faith Victory Church near Donner Park, said Stephen Hughes of the city-county planning department.

In their application filed Nov. 13, property owners and developers Rick and Janeen Sprague stated their proposed development would be an improvement to the character of the neighborhood and district.

The couple purchased the property July 30 for $275,000, according to county property records.

“These apartments will be very nice and upscale, which we believe will be attractive to the young business professional,” Rick Sprague said.

Rents on most of the units will likely run in the $800 to $1,000 a month range, Sprague said.

The conditional-use application for the 18,696-square-foot structure, which calls for 21 first-class apartments inside the former church, was approved 3-0 by the Columbus Board of Zoning Appeals.
