Services and studies

First Presbyterian — Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the church, 512 Seventh St., Columbus. On Epiphany, the sermon will be, “Following Stars,” based on Matthew 2:1-23. The adult choir will lead the worship, and the church will celebrate the sacrament of communion. New elders and deacons will also be ordained and installed.

Infant and toddler care is available from 9:15 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The men’s and women’s support groups meet at 7 a.m. Fridays, and a second men’s support group of working-age men meets every Monday at 6:15 a.m.

People in need of a meal are invited to Hot Meals offered 5 p.m. Friday, with entry through the glass doors on Franklin Street.

The church is LGBTQ-friendly, open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist — At Sunday’s 9 a.m. Traditional Service and 10 a.m. Celebration Service, the Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message, “Starting the Year Well: Genuine Gratitude,” at the church, 618 Eighth St., Columbus. The Scripture will be Matthew 2:1-12

Sunday School for all ages begins at 10:10 a.m.

Flintwood Wesleyan — The Amplify non-traditional service is 9 a.m. Sunday and Sunday School classes are at 10 a.m. The Well traditional service is at 11 a.m. Both Amplify and The Well are held in the main sanctuary. The Prayer Team will meet at 8 a.m. Sunday School classes meet in their regular rooms at the church, located at 5300 E. 25th St., Columbus.

“In The Beginning,” a small-group Bible study, will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 8. It is studying the book of Genesis.

Regular Wednesday activities will resume this week. There will be a supper at 5:30 p.m., followed by GLOW at 6:15 p.m.

The Prayer Team at 6:15 p.m. in The Prayer Room. Youth meets at 6:30 p.m. and Adult Bible study meets at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

Grace Lutheran At the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services, Rev. Gene Ernst of the Orphan Grain Train will be guest preacher and will bringing the message. Adult and Children’s Sunday School starts at 9:30 a.m.

From 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, the Alpha Course: An Intro to Christian Ideas will begin. All are welcome. Contact the church if childcare is needed.

Old Union United Church of Christ — The sermon for Sunday’s 10 a.m. service is “Unwelcome Instructions,” with text from Isaiah 60:1-6; Ephesians 3:1-12; and Matthew 2:1-12.

Sunday school will begin at 9 a.m., followed by fellowship at 9:40 a.m.

Wednesday Bible study is on hiatus until Jan. 16.

Petersville United Methodist — At the 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday, the Rev. Stormy Scherer-Berry will deliver the message, “Observed Star,” at the church, 2781 N. County Road 500E, Columbus. The Scripture is Matthew 2:1-12 will be shared by the liturgist. The choir will provide special music and Teresa Covert will give the children’s sermon. Communion will be served. A time of fellowship will follow the service.

Larry and Connie Nolting and Chris Kimerling will host the Monday night Bible study, meeting at 6:30 p.m. New members are welcome at either of the classes.

The Sit and Stitch group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, also at the Nolting home. Choir practice is at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the church, and Prayer Time will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

St. Paul Lutheran — At the 8 and 10 a.m. services, Pastor Doug Bauman will present his sermon, ”The Christmas Star,” based on Matthew 2:1-12. On Sunday, the Spanish worship service will be held in the chapel at 10:45 a.m with a meal to follow. The church is located at 2555 S. County Road 300E, Columbus.

Christian Education classes for all ages will be held at 9:30 a.m.

Westside Community — At 10 a.m. Sunday, Pastor Dennis Aud will lead the service at the church, at State Road 46 West and Tipton Lakes Boulevard. The children’s program, up to grade 6, will meet at the same time as the 10 a.m. worship service.

From 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 6 there will be an Epiphany Celebration at the church. There will be a brief devotion, observance of our Epiphany fire, and a fellowship meal afterward.

Events

Westside Community — The church will be offering the Financial Peace University course beginning Feb. 6. This nine-lesson course is a step-by-step guide to handle money using biblical wisdom and common sense. The church is located at at State Road 46 West and Tipton Lakes Boulevard.
