Shoals man arrested after stand-off on Central Avenue

A Shoals man was arrested after a 25-minute standoff with police after officers observed his truck traveling about 2 or 3 mph on Second Street in Columbus.

An Indiana State Police trooper saw a Dodge truck traveling slowing on Second Street at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday and additional officers then arrived and attempted to stop the driver, identified as Marty G. Peek, 34, Shoals.

Peek was reportedly screaming at passing cars and refused to pull over when officers tried to stop the truck, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Peek also swerved his vehicle and nearly struck a Columbus Police Department vehicle during the incident when the officer attempted to pass him.

A short time later, Peek’s vehicle stopped in the 500 block of Central Avenue, which is near Columbus Engine Plant 1. Officers conducted a high risk traffic stop but Peek refused to exit the vehicle, Harris said.

After a 25-minute standoff, Columbus Police Department officers approached Peek’s vehicle and utilized an electrical weapon to subdue him and take him into custody, Harris said.

Peek was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for medical clearance and then to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of felony resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, misdemeanor resisting law enforcement, misdemeanor obstructing traffic and misdemeanor reckless driving.

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies also assisted at the scene.
