Columbus Components Group, an auto parts manufacturer operating in the former Arvin plant on 17th Street, sent letters to its 500 employees warning the plant would be closed unless union members agreed to a 5 percent pay cut and other concessions.

Columbus businessman Dick Johnson, whose oil company operated the familiar Bigfoot convenience stores throughout southern Indiana, claimed Pizza Hut was stepping on his trademark by calling its new product, a 2-foot-long pizza, “The Bigfoot.”

A public meeting was held to unveil plans for a one-story, largely glass facade building to house The Republic newspaper plant on Second Street just south of the courthouse.
