Fueled by layoffs at manufacturing companies, Bartholomew County’s unemployment rate, 8.1 percent, was the highest since the mid-1980s. However, the area fared better than 76 of the state’s other 91 counties.

Area law enforcement officers continued a manhunt for suspects in a late-night crime spree that included two robberies and a stabbing in downtown Columbus.

Most Columbus classrooms were empty when all but 150 teachers took the day off at the urging of the Indiana State Teachers Association to protest against the state’s school aid policy.
