Moped driver arrested after traffic stop

Columbus police arrested an Elizabethtown man on drug-related charges after he was observed committing a traffic violation on a moped.

Officers saw Paul M. Atkins, 31, disregard a stop sign at Marr Road and McKinley Avenue at 12:30 a.m. Thursday, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. Officers stopped Atkins a short time later and determined he did not have a driver’s license, Harris said.

When placing him under arrest and searching his clothing, officers found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, Harris said. Atkins was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle without a license, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of methamphetamine, Harris said.

Atkins was released from the Bartholomew County Jail through the county’s program that allows selected offenders to be released from jail without having to post bond, jail officials said.
