Staff Reports

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department has hired three new deputies.

Mark Helms, Grant Carlson and Joseph Pugh were sworn into service by Bartholomew County Sheriff Matthew A. Myers on Monday morning. They took their oaths of office before friends and family in the department’s training room. Several Sheriff’s Department employees and employees from other agencies also attended the ceremony.

Helms, 58, is a retired Indiana State Police Trooper. Carlson, 21, currently resides in Bloomington, and is an honor graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Pugh, 28, of Evansville, previously served with the Evansville Police Department.

“All three deputies have completed the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and will now move directly into our field training phase under the guidance of experienced (sheriff’s) deputies,” Myers said.

The new deputies will be added to the ranks of the Road Patrol Division, Myers said.
