North boys win

BLOOMINGTON — The Columbus North boys track team pulled out a win in the final event, the 4×400-meter relay, to claim a season-opening 68-64 victory Tuesday at Bloomington South.

Freshman Tucker Smith led the Bull Dogs with wins in the shot put (54 feet, 2 inches) and discus (133-0) in his first high school outdoor meet. Hunter Spalding took the 100 meters (11.85 seconds), Matt Newell captured the 1,600 (4:37.61), Carson Littrell won the 800 (2:06.10) and North swept the 4×800 (8:27.87), 4×100 (44.03) and 4×400 (3:34.94) relays.

Bloomington South won the girls meet 66-48. Individual winners for the Bull Dogs were Adrienne Salemme in the pole vault (10-6), Emily Herndon in the shot (37-10), Emma Wetherald in the discus (107-0) and La’monica Smith in the 100 (13.44). North also took the 4×100 relay (52.83).

Eagles take third

BLOOMINGTON — Brown County’s boys and girls both finished third in a tri meet Tuesday at Bloomington North. The host Cougars won both meets, while Bedford North Lawrence took second in both.

The Eagle boys had second-place finishes from Marino Dolph in the 1,600 (4:44.93), Dale Phelps in the 300 hurdles (42.86) and Jackson McPheeters in the 800 (2:06.67). Brown County’s girls took second in the 4×100 relay (55.59).

Cougars edge East

Columbus East took its first loss of the season, a 3-2 setback to Bloomington North on Wednesday.

Megna Chari beat Katy Rusche 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Louna Prince downed Christine Zhou 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (1-1).

East’s Kathryn Hodzen fell to Joy Bhattachanja 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Ayano Nomura and Emie Kiser lost to Izzy Flynn and Siggy Force 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Cathrine Millwood and Cristina Marco fell to Jade Vasquez and Madison Alfonfo 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Franklin nips Eagles

NASHVILLE — Franklin pulled out a second-set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles Wednesday to hand Brown County a 3-2 defeat.

Baelyn Koester beat Nina Smith 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for the Eagles. Cassidy Davis and Hannah Asher downed Simi Kaur and Zoie Hawkins 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Brown County’s Julia Williams fell to Grace Bennett 7-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, and Meg Smith lost to Claire Genter 6-4, 7-6 (2) at No. 3 singles. Olivia Baughman and Grace Baughman fell to Jenna Hash and Hayley Haldeman 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.

Jets run-rule Cubs

MADISON — Zoee Nading threw a six-hitter and went 3 for 3 at the plate, and Hunter Crain went 3 for 4 with an inside-the-park grand slam and seven RBIs Wednesday to lead Hauser to its first win of the season, a 14-4, five-inning victory at Madison.

Mykenzie Ault went 3 for 4 for the Jets (1-2). Shelby Fugate went 2 for 4.

Jennings wins in 10

NORTH VERNON — Tori Lee homered with two out in bottom of seventh to tie it, and Jennings County pushed across a run on an error in the 10th to pull out a 2-1 Hoosier Hills Conference win against Jeffersonville on Wednesday.

Gabby Mahoney pitched all 10 innings for the Panthers (2-0, 1-0), throwing a six-hitter. Kylee Matern went 2 for 4 at the plate.

Panthers rally for win

CHARLESTOWN — Jennings County trailed 9-6 going to the seventh inning Wednesday, but scored five times in the top of the seventh to rally for an 11-9 win at Charlestown.

Cody Wilson had three RBIs, and Kyle Wilson added two RBIs for the Panthers (2-1). Josh Pettit allowed two runs and two hits over the final three innings to pick up the win in relief.
