Dennis Moats, long-time county emergency management director, dies

A local county emergency management director who led his community through some of the darkest moments of the past three decades has died.

Dennis Moats, who served as Bartholomew County’s Emergency Management Director from 1991 through 2015, died Wednesday afternoon at Columbus Regional Hospital.  He was 68.

“He was an awesome guy,” said Todd Noblitt, a former Chief Deputy Sheriff who is now Bartholomew County’s Emergency Operations Center director.  “Dennis was just a wealth of knowledge who never seemed to get overwhelmed or bent out of shape over anything.”

When he retired, Moats recalled during an interview that his biggest concern that didn’t amount to anything was the Y2K computer bug scare at the beginning of the new millennium.
