Letter: U.S. repeating sad history

Philosopher George Santayana (1863-1952) is known for his statement, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." We’re living through one of those repeats right now.

Seventy years ago the U.S. entered a sad period in political history known for McCarthyism. Encyclopedia Britannica records it thus: “McCarthyism, name given to the period of time in American history that saw Wisconsin Sen. Joseph McCarthy produce a series of investigations and hearings from the late 1940s through the 1950s in an effort to expose supposed communist infiltration of various areas of the U.S. government. The term has since become a byname for defamation of character or reputation by means of widely publicized indiscriminate allegations, especially on the basis of unsubstantiated charges.”

The Mueller report simply demonstrates what King Solomon stated in Ecclesiastes 19: there is nothing new under the sun.
