COLUMBUS, INDIANA

Nancy Janet Murphy, 82, of Columbus, passed from this life at 5:23 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at the Franciscan Hospice House in Indianapolis.

Mrs. Murphy was born January 11, 1937, in Jennings County, Indiana, the daughter of Alvin Elbert and Eva Maude Etchison Coryell. On June 24, 1960, Nancy married Travis Michael Murphy; he preceded her in death October 21, 2000.

Mrs. Murphy was a United State Air Force veteran; she was honorably discharged January 9, 1961.

She was a 1958 graduate of the Methodist School of Nursing in Indianapolis.

Mrs. Murphy had a successful nursing career, she was a registered nurse at the VA Hospital in Indianapolis, in the United States Air Force, Nassau General Hospital in Fernandina Beach, Florida, St. Luke’s Methodist in Jacksonville, Florida, Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida and she retired from St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.

Mrs. Murphy loved to cook and sew, and she was an awesome caretaker to her family.

Mrs. Murphy is survived by her daughter, Erin Ann Murphy and her husband, Richard Hebblethwaite of Arlington, Virginia; her sisters, Rhea Quillen, Vera Hill and Hallie Huckaby all of Columbus and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Christopher Michael Murphy May 30, 2000 and Patrick Kevin Murphy August 23, 2005; sisters, June Mitchell and O’Donna “Fern” Hartwell and brothers, Leo, Donald and Basil Coryell.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street; Pastor Jeff Jones will officiate.

Family and friends may gather for visitation from 12:30 p.m. until service time Wednesday.

Mrs. Murphy will be laid to rest next to her sons at Garland Brook Cemetery. Full military honors will be presented by the U.S. Air Force Ceremonial Unit and the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or St. Francis Hospice.
