Local man arrested on a charge of burglary following witness tip

A witness helped Columbus police arrest a man who was opening car doors in a Columbus subdivision.

Officers were sent to the 2300 block of Middle View Drive in the Shadow Creek subdivision at 11:40 p.m. Wednesday after a witness said a man, who was not wearing a shirt, entered a car there, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The witness told police the man, later identified as Brent A. Roach, 29, Columbus, entered a car in the 2300 block of Middle View Drive and used a garage door opener to gain access to the residence, Harris said. A short time later, the individual was seen riding a bicycle away from the home while carrying an unknown item, Harris said.

Officers located Roach and stopped him in the 3200 block of Parkview Drive, Harris said. Officers observed Roach throwing an item into the grass prior to Roach being stopped and later determined the item was a cordless drill.

Officers determined that the drill, as well as the bicycle that Roach was riding, were stolen from a nearby residence, Harris said.

Roach was arrested on preliminary charges of felony burglary, misdemeanor unlawful entry into a vehicle and misdemeanor public intoxication, Harris said.

Officers are urging all residents to remove valuable items from their vehicles and double checking that their car doors are locked, Harris said.
