Former Columbus Mayor Fred Armstrong, who is also a Vietnam veteran, read the names of the 27 Bartholomew County residents who died in the Vietnam War during Memorial Day ceremonies at the Bartholomew County Veterans Memorial.

“I was lucky I got to come home,” Armstrong, a four-term Columbus mayor, told the estimated 100 people in attendance at the service Monday on the county courthouse grounds. “To those here today who have lost loved ones, there are no words of condolence that can console your grief. We can only pray you find peace and resolve in their sacrifices that, believe me, will never be forgotten.”

Armstrong was the featured speaker at the annual Columbus and Bartholomew County Community Memorial Day service.
