Pence introduces resolution for national day of remembrance

WASHINGTON — Rep. Greg Pence, R-Ind., along with three other congressmen, has introduced a House Resolution expressing support for designating Oct. 23 as a national day of remembrance for those killed in the 1983 terrorist bombing of the Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon.

Pence, along with Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass. and Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Calif., submitted the resolution Thursday. Pence said it was very personal to him as he served in the Marines from 1979 to 1984 and when assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines was ordered to Beirut in 1983.

Pence’s battalion shipped out just days before the bombing, Pence said.

In October 1983, an Iranian national drove a truck bomb into the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, killing 241 Americans, including 220 Marines.
