Police officers are sworn to protect and serve their communities and residents. That is best accomplished when residents view police in a positive manner, as a trusted resource to turn to for help.

If such a perspective can be established early, it’s more likely to be kept as a person gets older. That’s why Columbus Police Department’s second annual Hook a Kid on Fishing event was a good idea.

The July 24 event at the lake in front of the Toyota Material Handling Plant at Walesboro provided a fun way for children to interact with police officers and build relationships. About 30 children and police participated. The event allowed children to meet officers and receive their help in a non-police setting, and promoted personal interaction.

It was a worthwhile event that parents should consider for their children in the future.
