Grandmother arrested after leaving infant in locked minivan while shopping

A grandmother accused of leaving a 1-year-old baby in a locked minivan while she went shopping Wednesday afternoon faces a preliminary Level 6 felony charge of child neglect.

Mary S. Andres, 62, of Dupont was arrested by police after a customer heard the child crying inside the vehicle parked outside a store on State Road 3 in North Vernon, according to a news release from the North Vernon Police Department.

The customer told several people in the parking lot, and one of those people was able to unlock the vehicle and get the infant out. The windows were partially rolled down at the time of the incident, reported at 2:39 p.m.

Andres was arrested after police were able to determine she was inside the store shopping with her other grandson. She told police the child was sleeping and that she didn’t plan to be in the store long.

Andres was booked into the Jennings County Jail at 4:30 p.m. on a $1,055 bond.
