East rallies for win

FLOYDS KNOBS — Class 3A No. 20 Columbus East kicked off its season Monday night with a 4-1 Hoosier Hills Conference win at Floyd Central.

The Highanders got on the board first with a goal in the 12th minute. The Olympians’ Chris Quisenbery scored in the 26th minute, and the teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.

East took control in the second half, first with a Jorge Nieto goal off a Leyton Erfmeier assist in the 41st minute. Erfmeier then scored in the 48th minute off assist from Gabe Rivera and assisted on a Ben Romig goal in the 60th minute.

Floyd Central outshot the Olympians 14-11, with both teams putting five shots on goal. East’s Zach Roberts recorded three saves, and Pete Coriden added one save.

“For the players to go down a goal and have the composure to fight back and not only win the game, but to win the game in convincing fashion is great for the kids,” East coach Brad Barber said.

North rolls to victory

Nathaly Munnicha fired an even-par 36 to win medalist honors and lead No. 6 Columbus North to a 167-188 win against Greenwood at Harrison Lake Country Club.

Annie Anderson and Yestika Nischol each shot 42 for the Bull Dogs. Gwen Anderson added a 47, and Ella Wilks and Macy Euler each shot 48.

East falls to Seymour

SEYMOUR — The Olympians broke the 200 mark, but fell to Seymour 189-198 at Shadowood.

Lauren Steinwedel led the Olympians with a 46. Peyton Meier carded a 49, Cristen Martinez added a 51, Harley Gant shot 52 and Katie Hong had a 55.

Eagles down Spartans

NASHVILLE — Taylor Poling won medalist honors with a 49 to lead Brown County to a 206-233 win against Southwestern (Shelby) at Salt Creek.

Aubrey Hollander carded a 51, and Allison Stogsdill, Ainslie Winton and Courtney Hill all shot 53. Christy Sebastian added 62, Abby Padgett had a 64 and Annika Evenson finished with a 65.

Panthers win on fifth

BATESVILLE — Jennings County won its first match of the season on the fifth-score tiebraker after both the Panthers and Batesville shot 228 at Hillcrest Country Club. Milan finished third with a 259.

Emy Ralston led Jennings with a 55. Ellie Hearne carded a 56, Sophia Curry added a 57, Abby Rowlett shot 60 and Lavanna Rickly had a 69.

Tigers topple Lancers

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh came out on the short end of a 203-219 decision against Triton Central at Timbergate.

Morgan Calhoun led the Lancers with a 47. Haven Link added a 58, Maddy McGaha shot 59 and Annelise Lollar had a 60.

Crusaders sweep Tigers

Columbus Christian avenged one of its two losses from last regular season with a 25-13, 25-9, 25-11 win against Crothersville.

Madison Henderson recorded nine kills, one block, four digs and four aces; and Lauren Hunnicutt had 10 kills, one block and two aces for the Crusaders (3-0). Hannah Stair notched 21 assists, three digs and 10 aces, and Kayla Jones added two kills and five digs.

Lancers fall in five

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh rallied from a two-game deficit to force a fifth set, but Jac-Cen-Del recovered for a 25-19, 25-16, 18-25, 23-25, 15-9 season-opening victory.

Paige Burton led the Lancers with seven kills, 12 assists and four aces. Emily Chappelow added seven kills and seven assists, Gracie Crawhorn had two kills and two aces, Kaylee Swallows served three aces and Carly Cowan added two aces.

Panthers stop Cougars

GREENSBURG — South Decatur came away with a 25-19, 25-15, 25-18 loss against Knightstown.

Lana Bell pounded seven kills, Whitnye Burton recorded 10 assists, Ali Jameson notched 16 digs and Brook Somers served two aces to lead the Cougars (0-4). Kalie Fry added five kills, five assists and seven digs, and Burton and Somers each had seven digs.

Trinity opens with win

HENRYVILLE — Class A No. 3 Trinity Lutheran opened its season with a 25-16, 25-12, 25-16 victory at Henryville.

Sydney Jaynes pounded nine kills and two blocks, and Bailey Reynolds 29 assists and 10 digs to lead the Cougars. Ruthie Bingham served four aces.

Also for Trinity, Hannah Sabotin recorded eight kills and eight digs, and Bailey Tabeling notched eight digs. Kennedy Hoffman had one block, and Paige Lawrence served three aces.

Panthers blank Olympians

Columbus East opened its season with a 5-0 loss to Bloomington South.

Pranav Kumar fell to Daniel Borki 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Derek Heideman lost to Marcel Borki 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Matthew Degner fell to Ethan Uhls 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians.

East’s Daniel Murphy and Wyatt Romine lost to Michael Asplund and Chris Lian 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Bridger Wagner and Emmit Romine fell to Andy Chang and Alex Coniaris 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Jennings drops opener

MILAN — Milan pulled out three three-set wins to claim a 4-1 season-opening victory against Jennings County.

The Panthers’ win came at No. 2 singles, where Justin Ramey downed Nathan Hancock 6-3, 6-2.

Jennings’ Wyatt St. John fell to Carter Wade 6-7 (0), 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Greyson Jackson lost to Caleb Prozanski 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Joe Kelley and Jacob Vogel fell to Brayden Furr and Bo Wade 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5 at No. 1 doubles, and Alex Leach and Owen Law lost to Joe Hawk and Shane Phelps 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Pioneers top Trinity

SEYMOUR — Trinity Lutheran played Providence to a scoreless tie for more than 60 minutes, but the Pioneers netted three goals in the final 17 minutes to claim a 3-0 season-opening victory.

The Cougars finished with two shots on goal.
