Lee Pendleton Scott Hamlin passed away Saturday, August 25, 2019, surrounded in love by her family.

She is survived by her beloved brother, Jerome Scott, of Jamestown, Rhode Island and his partner Primrose Bullock, whom Lee loved as a sister. She is also survived by the lights of her life-her daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren: Amy Rastatter (Daniel) of Pittsburgh; Elizabeth Hamlin (Jon Barnitt) of Bloomington; and Mary Hamlin of Columbus. Lee’s grandchildren, who surrounded her with love and song during her passing are: Emily Rastatter of Pittsburgh; Sarah Stepanian (Mark) of Alexandria, VA; Anna Rastatter of Pittsburgh; Lucas Padron of Bloomington; Zachary Ruehman of Columbus; Adam Rastatter of Philadelphia; and Matt Ruehman of Columbus.

She is preceded in death by her dear friend and kindred soul Freda Neal.

Lee lived an example of love and peace for her daughters and grandchildren. She died imparting the same example to them and will be deeply missed by her family.

Lee was born August 29, 1939 in Boston, MA to Rene Evans Scott and Mary Jerome Scott. She grew up in Danvers, MA and attended Wheaton College. After graduating Wheaton College, she began a lifelong career of loving care when she became a teacher at the Perkins School of the Blind in Boston. In February 1962, Lee married Charles Joseph Hamlin, Jr. of Boston who preceded her in death.

Lee devoted herself to raising her three daughters as her growing family became her first priority. She also loved her gardens, as well as singing in church and community choirs. And, although she lived in many states from North Carolina to Indiana, she was sure to make her annual pilgrimage with her brother and Prim to Drake’s Island ME, so she could put her feet in the ocean which filled her soul.

In 1985, Lee earned her Masters in Social Work and began practicing family therapy in Columbus. It was through this work at agencies such as Family Service of Bartholomew County that she touched the lives of so many in the community with her love and grace. This love was returned, most notably during the past year throughout her painful struggle. The family is immensely grateful for the outpouring of support for Lee as it sustained and strengthened her.

In keeping with the family’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on September 7th, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church in Columbus. In lieu of flowers, and in accordance with Lee’s wishes, the family asks that donations be made to Planned Parenthood or First Presbyterian Church of Columbus.
