“Chasing Color and Light in Columbus,” an art exhibition and fundraising auction for new sound equipment at North Christian Church, opens at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and runs through mid-November.
The collection of 17 paintings displayed are a gift from Weiming Zhao, well known in artistic circles as a plein air (open air) painter born in China and now based in Manitoba, Canada.
The exhibition will open with guest speakers, a reception, beverages and time not only to peruse the paintings but also to place opening bids. The exhibition and bidding ends Nov. 17 with a closing celebratory event and final sale. The financial goal is $10,000.

Landmark Columbus is working with the Columbus Area Visitors Center and the church on the event.
Wishing to show his appreciation for the city that his brother and sister have cherished as home for several years, Weiming donated his entire Columbus collection and all proceeds from its sale to North Christian Church.
While visiting his siblings in 2017, Weiming spent his days painting 17 of the renowned architectural structures that dot the city landscape. Paintings include North Christian, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, First Christian Church, St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, the Robert N. Stewart Bridge, the Bartholomew County Courthouse, the “Large Arch” and a number of other sites.
New state-of-the-art audio equipment will strengthen the church’s bonds with the city as it hosts civic and social events, according to organizers. North Christian Church was designed by famed architect Eero Saarinen, and envisioned by its founders to be not only a house of worship, but also a center for community gatherings.
That especially has been the case in recent years for events such as those connected to Exhibit Columbus and community memorials to show spiritual unity among diverse faith after national and international tragedies.
And it is in that spirit that “Chasing Color and Light in Columbus” is exhibited, organizers said.
