In true Columbus fashion, dozens of local stakeholders from area organizations are collaborating to organize the commemoration of the city’s bicentennial in 2021.
Mayor Jim Lienhoop announced the formation of the Columbus Bicentennial Commission Monday. The team of individuals represent more than 15 local entities, including Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp., the Columbus Area Multi-Ethnic Organization, Columbus Regional Health, Cummins Inc. and LHP.
Mary Ferdon, the city’s executive director of administration and community development, said Columbus city officials started considering ways to recognize the 200-year anniversary earlier this year. They quickly realized it was an important historical event for the entire community and decided to create a commission of various voices to contribute to the planning.
“We ended up with a structure that we think gets a lot of people involved so it’s not asking any one group to do too much work, but we’ll have lots of opportunities for people to participate,” Ferdon said.
