A new pickup truck is given away each year during the Mill Race Marathon, but until Saturday, this year’s winner had never won a big prize.

Brad Shofner, a Columbus native who works for Cummins Inc., won the drawing for a 2019 Ram pickup truck with a Cummins turbo diesel engine at the conclusion of the seventh annual race event.

Only marathon and half-marathon finishers are eligible to win the truck, which also requires the winner to be present to win.

A husband and father of two young children, Shofner, 35, said his family already owns a car and a van.

“But this truck is something that my family will be able to use for a long time,” he said.

The truck was donated by Bob Poynter Hyundai, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram. It’s worth nearly $60,000, Bob Poynter representative Randy Smith said.

And when something that valuable is given away randomly, it tends to bring a lot of runners to Columbus, said J.D. Roberts a co-owner and partner in the dealership.

“There’s no other marathon I know that has a cash prize like that for someone who simply finishes,” Roberts said.
