Infant girl pronounced dead at hospital after ambulance call to courthouse

Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies and the Bartholomew County Coroner’s office are investigating the death of a 2-month-old infant girl who was reportedly not breathing while at the second floor of the county courthouse Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies, Columbus police and firefighters and an ambulance were sent to the courthouse around 2 p.m. about the report, and the infant was later transported by ambulance to Columbus Regional Hospital.

Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting said the infant was declared dead at the hospital by Chief Deputy Coroner Charlie DeWeese.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday, Nolting said. The infant did have some prior medical conditions, he said. Family members were with the infant on the courthouse second floor, which has court offices and courtrooms.

The identity of the child is not being released pending notification of extended family, Nolting said.
