A Chicago producer and Columbus North High School graduate will be the keynote speaker at the annual Freedom Fund Banquet for the Columbus/Bartholomew County Area NAACP Branch of the NAACP Oct. 17 at The Commons in downtown Columbus.
Rodger B. Jackson will speak on the theme, “When We Fight, We Win!” at the event at 5:30 p.m. Last year’s event at Columbus East High School attracted more than 130 people.
Generally, the organization’s participation for the dinner include its members, city and county leaders, members of other justice-oriented groups and agencies and others.
The event’s title refers to the fact that the gathering raises money for college scholarships for local students.
Jackson is executive producer for the web series “No Chiraq,” taking its title from a Chicago city nickname. The series focuses on Chicago life among the black and Latino communities and is meant “to give a voice to how families from different ethnic backgrounds deal with the struggles of day-to-day life,” Jackson said in an interview. “They are trying to get ahead by whatever means they have available.”
He also is the creator of INTV, a production company in Chicago and head of a new Chicago-based based streaming platform called The-I.
