Perhaps the greatest lesson among local couples who have participated in the annual Not-So-Newlywed Game fundraiser is that laughter can keep a love and a marriage afloat amid life’s storms, icebergs, you name it. And those twosomes I have seen goodnaturedly chuckle at the themselves and, at times, their mate in the games the past couple of years have reminded me that today’s challenges often end up as tomorrow’s comedy. Turning Point Domestic Violence Services presents its game at 5:30 p.m. today at The Commons, 300 Washington St., with a quick, annual meeting just before the competition unfolds. Mickey Kim (pictured) is the dry-witted game host. Information and tickets: turningpointdv.org/events.

You can steer your weekend in the right direction at the final free First Fridays Cruise-In of the season from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday on the historic Hope Town Square. Local band Oddz R, an area favorite who also will play Saturday at the 450 North Brewing Company’s Corn Maze Beer Fest, will play classic rock on the bandstand from 6 to 8 p.m. Organizers say that all vehicles are welcome. The event committee also has organized a coloring contest for students. Entries will be judged and prizes announced.

The musical comedy “Church Basement Ladies” opens today at Willow Leaves of Hope, 326 Jackson St. in Hope, and runs through Sunday. The work features four distinct characters and their relationships as they organize the food and solve the problems of a rural Minnesota church about to undergo changes in 1965. The women, with the help of the church pastor, handle everything from the celebration of a wedding party to the joy of a record-breaking Christmas dinner. Times are 6 p.m. today through Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday, plus the same schedule Oct. 10-13. Tickets: $26, including dinner and the play. Reservations available by calling 812-546-0640.
