The Bartholomew County Public Library, in partnership with Loci Creative and Exhibit Columbus, is hosting an event to initiate the start of the library’s new seed share program, Cleo’s Seed Share.

A seed library is a resource for community members to donate and take free seeds and learn about gardening through workshops and other resources they might need to start their own garden and save their own seeds. This event will kickoff the beginning of the seed collection process for the new program.

At 1 p.m. on Saturday, the community can attend a workshop about seed saving in the lower level reception area of the library, 536 Fifth St., or participate in a story time and craft session about seeds in the Exhibit Columbus garden terrace.

At 2 p.m. on the library plaza, anyone is welcome to collect seeds from the garden. Harvested seeds can be donated to Cleo’s Seed Share to help start the collection.

Starting in the spring 2020, community members will be able to access a wide range of seeds at the library for free. The library encourages patrons to then donate their extra seeds at the end of the growing season back to the library to replenish the seed supply.

Rachel Kavathe with Loci Creative said the seed share will have many important benefits for the community, including educating on gardening and the role plants play in preserving local habitats and pollinator species, increasing food security and serving unde-rserved populations and increasing access to healthy food.

Saturday’s event will also feature a seed swap where anyone can bring seeds from their own yard or garden to share with others.
