JENNINGS COUNTY — Jennings County Sheriff deputies arrested a North Vernon man after he was accused of fleeing when deputies were trying to serve an arrest warrant at a home on Kensington Square.
Deputies were at the residence the Sunday night when they saw Thomas Burton, 32, North Vernon, fleeing from the rear of the home, said Jennings County Sheriff Chief Deputy Dave Turner.
Sgt. Cody Low used K9 Axel to track Burton, Turner said. But before a track was started, Reserve Deputy Ray Mason found Burton hiding nearby. However, Thomas fled from Mason on foot back to the original location where Low and Axel were waiting, Turner said. Low told Burton to stop but he failed to comply, Turner said.
Axel was released to apprehend Burton, which assisted deputies in gaining control of the suspect, Turner said. However, Burton was able to make it to his feet and again tried to run, Turner said.
Axel was released a second time and again apprehended Burton, Turner said, and Burton was then arrested.
Burton was transferred to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital where he was treated and released, Turner said.
Burton was then taken to the Jennings County Jail where intake personnel found methamphetamine hidden on his person, Turner said.
Burton was arrested on preliminary charges of felony possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor resisting law enforcement, in addition to the warrant, Turner said.
He was being held in the Jennings County Jail in lieu of $8,310 bond, jail officials said.
