Preparing and cooking food is an important life skill that, sadly, not everyone knows how to do. Some kids, however, can take classes in high school that get them on the path to becoming a chef.
The culinary course that is offered at Jennings County High School is full of food and fun. Denise Axsom, the teacher of this culinary class, takes the class on a special trip each year to Jungle Jim’s in Ohio. Jungle Jim’s has a selection of more than 180,000 products that shoppers can buy from all over the world.
Upon arrival, one can tour the extremely large and easy-to-get-lost at store. One can visit Spain and Scandinavia, if they wish, or pop over into the candy world that is in the store.
The tour includes many samples and a jaw-dropping amount of selections from any kind of product one can think of. This store is like the Willy Wonka factory and students are the lucky golden ticket winners — the golden tickets being green squares that indicate you are on the tour.

The awaited finale is the opportunity to eat a dried worm at the very end of the tour. The trip alone is worth taking the class!
Jungle Jim’s is inclusive and a fun trip to go on for school! In Axsom’s culinary class, she goes once every year and after a lunch at a pizza buffet shop called CiCi’s students get about 60 to 90 minutes of free shopping time. They can go back to Jungle Jim’s and grab a map and have a go for it.
Not only are students learning how to cook and prepare food for themselves for the day that they leave home, but they also get to see and learn about foods from all across the world that, without this class, they would have never had the opportunity to see and try!
This culinary arts class is offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors. It is an elective that will keep students excited to go to school and, overall, is one of those classes that one feels genuinely benefited them after taking it!
