The Columbus Firemen’s Cheer Fund raised just under $2,000 and gathered about 60 toy donations during its second annual board game-a-thon last weekend.
Nearly 40 people joined in on the 24-hour event aimed to raise money and toy donations for the local Cheer Fund whose mission is to help underprivileged children at Christmas.
The idea for the day-long event came from a group of Cummins Inc. employees who play games together every Tuesday night. Tyson O’Haver, the event organizer, said he and the group started discussing how they could incorporate games into a fundraiser for the Cheer Fund.
O’Haver said the event raised $1,190 for the Cheer Fund this year. The group was also filled the back seat of a pickup truck with about 60 donated toys.

Only three people played games for the full 24 hour event, which ran Nov. 15from 6 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 16 at Hotel Indigo in downtown Columbus. O’Haver said several participants, including himself, snuck away from the event to catch a few hours of sleep, but they were back at it early Saturday morning.
