COLUMBUS
Steven W. “Zeke” Sandlin, 77, of Columbus, passed from this life Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at his home surrounded by loving family.
Mr. Sandlin was born December 30, 1941, in Columbus, Indiana, the son of Byron Harold and Freida Virginia Ruddick Sandlin. On February 3, 1978, Zeke married Paula S. Friedrich.
Mr. Sandlin was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Sandlin was a former employee at the Cummins Tech Center, manager of Two Bit Rush Coffee House and was a maintenance technician at Dolly Madison retiring in 2002 after 18 years of service.
A member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Mr. Sandlin was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1414 and a member of Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Assembly No. 247.
Mr. Sandlin was affiliated with Boy Scouts of America for over 25 years and served in various roles; Scoutmaster of Troop 555 at St. Bartholomew, a unit/district commissioner in Lenni Lenape District, staff at Maumee Boy Scout Reservation from 2003-2010, and helped out at countless scouting activities with instruction or in the kitchen. Often heard was his hearty “dig it”.
He was a Vigil member of Order of the Arrow and was recipient of the BSA District Award of Merit and Silver Beaver Award.
Mr. Sandlin enjoyed membership at VFW Post 1987 and American Legion Post 24.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Paula; children, Sarah Muncy of Greenwood, Michael (Allison) Sandlin of Calvert City, Kentucky, John (Leah) Sandlin of Columbus and Matthew (Rachel) Sandlin of Indianapolis; 15 grandchildren, Stephanie (James) Scott, Julia and Elizabeth Muncy, Jordan Reagan, Blake, Bailey, Knox, Scout, Eden, Madison, Nolan, Chip, Alice and JohnFredrick Sandlin; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Tom Sandlin of Indianapolis and Kenny (Dee) Sandlin of Edinburgh; and several cousins, nieces and nephews nearby and in Alabama.
Mr. Sandlin was preceded in death by his parents, Byron and Freida Sandlin and a brother, Alan Dean Sandlin.
In keeping with Zeke’s wishes, his body was donated to the Anatomical Education Program at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
The Mass of Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 28, 2019 at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church; Father Chris Wadelton will be the celebrant.
Family and friends may gather for visitation from 9 a.m. until Mass time Saturday at the church.
The Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Assembly No. 247 will be the honor guard.
Military honors will be presented by the U.S. Air Force Ceremonial Unit.
