COLUMBUS — The City of Columbus will temporarily conduct all public meetings at FairOaks Mall beginning Jan. 10 through the end of February while the elevator at Columbus City Hall is replaced.
The elevator will be shut down for 60 days as crews work to replace the original structure, installed in 1981. During that time, all public city meetings will be held in the former J. Nicole Store at FairOaks Mall, 2380 25th St.
Jamie Brinegar, the city’s finance director, said the new elevator will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, specifically regarding signage and height of buttons.
The elevator was previously out of order in June 2017 when a lightning strike was believed to have caused an outage of the elevator. During that time, city meetings were moved to Donner Center.
Columbus City Hall has two entrances, one of which is in the rear of the building, which has an elevator on the ground floor with stairs leading to the second floor. The second location, in front of the building facing Washington Street, also has an elevator and can take people to the ground level or the third floor, where City Council chambers and several city offices are located.
The public is being encouraged to call City Hall at 812-376-2500 or check the city’s website to check on locations of public meetings that are scheduled through June 23. Individuals with accessibility needs who may need to visit City Hall are also asked to call that number for assistance.
The last date of any meetings in City Hall will be Jan. 7. Columbus Board of Public Works and Safety will convene in the City Hall Council Chambers at 10 a.m. Jan 7, and Columbus City Council will convene in the City Hall Council Chambers at 6 p.m. Jan. 7.
The Bartholomew County Plan Commission will be meet for its regularly scheduled meeting at FairOaks Mall on Jan. 8 at 8:30 a.m. The Columbus Plan Commission will also meet at FairOaks Mall for its regularly scheduled meeting Jan. 8 at 4 p.m.
