Lancers top Jets, move into tournament final

EDINBURGH — Destiney Ramey had no idea how close she was to breaking Edinburgh’s school career scoring mark Friday night.

“It will be awesome,” Ramey said of getting the record. “It’s pretty great to get in the 1,000-point club. To be the leading scorer would be even better.”

Ramey scored 22 points to lead the host Lancers to a 73-51 victory over Hauser in the Johnson Memorial Health Holiday Classic semifinals. Edinburgh (9-3) will play Corydon Central in today’s 4 p.m. championship game.

Ramey, who moved into the starting lineup as a freshman, needs two to tie and three to break the record of 1,157 points held by 2010 graduate Emilee Owens.

Ramey had an off shooting night, hitting just 9 of 28 from the field, but she had plenty of help. Haven Link scored 19 on 8-of-16 shooting, and Annelise Lollar was right behind with 18 points, hitting 8 of 11 shots.

“I like when it’s more of a team thing instead of a two-person thing,” Ramey said. “If someone gets on fire, we’ll keep giving them the ball.”

The Lancers, who led 18-7 after the first quarter, took control by outscoring Hauser 25-15 in the second.

“I thought our transition offense was pretty good,” Edinburgh coach Amy Schilling said. “Getting up and down the court and hitting the open player. I like our intensity of hitting the open player. In the second half, we got a little lackadaisical. We probably could have switched up our defense.”

Schilling said the Jets (6-7) tried to play a triangle-and-two on Ramey and Lollar. In Edinburgh’s 74-45 first-round win over South Decatur Friday morning, the Cougars used a similar defense on Ramey and Link.

“Other players stepped up, which made a difference,” Schilling said. “I thought (freshman Gracie) Crawhorn did a good job of finding the open player.”

Kyleigh Parrott, who hit six 3-pointers, was high for Hauser (6-7) with 27 points in defeat.

Against South Decatur, Ramey scored 21 points, including four 3-pointers, and Lollar added 20 points and Callie Hancock had 11 for the Lancers.

Parrott scored 12 points and hit the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Hauser to a 40-39 first-round victory over Indianapolis Lutheran on Saturday afternoon.

The Jets will play Southwestern (Shelby) for third place at 2 p.m. today.
