Emergency Management monitoring flooding possibility

Staff Reports

Bartholomew County Emergency Management is monitoring the potential for local flooding with the forecast of widespread heavy rainfall over the next few days.

The current weather assessment for Bartholomew County states the area is expected to receive a little more than 3 inches of rain between today and Saturday, said Shannan Hinton, emergency management director.

Hinton said there is the potential for flooding between Friday and Saturday, although current river levels are normal.

Emergency management will also be monitoring the status of roadways as wet conditions could freeze with dropping temperatures on Saturday, along with high winds, Hinton said.

According to the National Weather Service, a developing low-pressure system will bring widespread rainfall to Indiana from today into Saturday evening. A deep upper level trough of low-pressure will move through the American southwest and into the Ohio Valley, which will result in unseasonably warm and moist air from the Gulf of Mexico flowing into our area. This will allow temperatures to climb into the middle-upper 50s, nearing 60, from today to Saturday.

On Saturday, a strong cold front will drop temperatures below freezing, forecasters said. This will allow for a period of mixed precipitation. Little snow accumulation is expected, how-ever slick road conditions will be likely, according to the National Weather Service. High winds will also be a hazard on Saturday ahead of the cold front, forecasters said.
