CFD called to fryer fire at Arby’s

Staff Reports

Columbus firefighters were called to Arby’s at 2005 25th St. at 9:33 a.m. Tuesday about a small fire that was extinguished by employees.

Arby’s managers told firefighters employees had heard a popping noise from the area of the grease fryer station, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman. Employees then saw an orange glow on the wall behind the fryer.

Employees disconnected the power to the fryer and pulled it away from the wall, Wilson said.

Small flames were visible behind the fryer and employees used a damp towel to smother the flames, Wilson said.

Due to the accumulation of cooking grease located in the area where flames were reported, the amount of damage to the fryer device is unknown.

The restaurant is closed until the Bartholomew County Department of Health can inspect the premises, Wilson said.

The restaurant does have a fire suppression system located at the fryer station, but the system did not activate, Wilson said. Investigators determined that, due to the location and size of the fire, the suppression system was not exposed to high heat or direct flames.
