MADISON — The Columbus East girls tuned up for Saturday’s Hoosier Hills Conference meet by swimming to a 104-71 victory at Madison on Tuesday.
Marin Wieneke won the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 37.22 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (1:15.68), Jennifer Utterback took the 50 freestyle (26.93) and 100 butterfly (1:08.75) and Karissa Miller captured the 100 freestyle (57.22) and 100 backstroke (1:05.28) to lead the Olympians.
The Olympians also had wins from Caroline Andress in the 200 freestyle (2:19.21), Cloie McDonald in the diving competition (153.05) and Ellie Proffitt in the 500 freestyle (6:12.45). East won the 200 medley (2:01.27) and 400 freestyle (4:06.51) relays.
“I think they all had some great times tonight and dug deep and had a really great meet,” East girls coach Jill Arnholt said. “Lots of girls were getting out of the water saying, ‘I just PR’ed.’ I was really proud of them.”
Madison won the boys meet 104-71. The Olympians had wins from Chad Kelly in the 50 freestyle (23.82), John Roberts in diving (128.70) and Mason Curry in the 100 butterfly (58.05). East also took the 200 freestyle (1:37.29) and 400 freestyle (1:41.29) relays.
“We knew that Madison was much improved from last year, so the kids knew they were once again facing some stiff competition,” East boys coach Dave Fribley said. “We came down here to swim, and we swam. We had a lot of PRs. Despite the loss, we were pleased with how well we did.”
