Alford becomes youngest coach to reach 600 wins

Former Indiana University star Steve Alford became the youngest men’s basketball coach in NCAA history to win 600 games Saturday night when he led Nevada to a 96-74 win against New Mexico, one of his former teams.

Alford, 56, is 600-306 overall, including 522-277 at the Division I level. He went 78-29 as coach at Manchester from 1991-95.

From there, Alford went 78-48 in four years at Southwest Missouri State, 152-106 in eight years at Iowa, 155-52 in six years at New Mexico and 124-63 in 5 1/2 years at UCLA. He currently is 13-8 in his first year at Nevada.
