Rooks is Big Ten Wrestler of Week

For the second time this season, Indiana wrestling redshirt freshman Graham Rooks has earned Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors. The conference announced the latest honor on Jan. 21.

Rooks, a redshirt freshman from Columbus East, beat No. 14 Yahya Thomas of Northwestern on Jan. 18 and followed that up with a win against No. 6 Griffin Parriott of Purdue on Jan. 20.

Rooks, wrestling at 149 pounds, is ranked No. 22 by FloWrestling and No. 16 by Intermat in the latest poll.

Rooks also won a 4-2 decision against Michael Doetsch at 149 in Sunday’s dual match against Maryland. His brother Cayden, a freshman from East, won a 7-2 decision against King Sandoval of Maryland at 133.

The Hoosiers won the dual match 19-16.

Combest earns wins

University of Indianapolis’ Dawson Combest, won an 18-0 tech fall at 157 against Wisconsin-Parkside’s Subhan Umar during a dual meet on Jan. 21.

Combest, a redshirt freshman from East, won a 2-1 decision at 157 over Bellarmine’s Devan Hendricks in Friday’s dual meet.

The latest polls have Combest ranked No. 11. He has been ranked as high as No. 8.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Huffman earns honor

Cedarville guard Ashlyn Huffman was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week from Jan. 13-19, the conference announced Wednesday.

Huffman had a double-double of 10 points and 10 assists during an 87-72 victory against Tiffin and added 16 points and five assists in an 86-73 win at Ohio Dominican.

Huffman, a junior from Columbus North, had nine points, eight assists and three rebounds in 78-52 win over Ohio Valley University on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets are 14-5.

Guy, Williams contribute

Marian forward Imani Guy finished with 19 points and nine rebounds in a 93-60 win over Grace College on Saturday.

Guy, a junior from North, had 23 points and four rebounds in a 73-69 loss to St. Francis on Wednesday. Elle Williams, a senior from North, added two rebounds.

The Knights are 19-3.

Ballard nets two wins

Franklin College guard Britney Ballard recorded 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal in an 85-61 win over Earlham on Saturday.

Ballard, a sophomore from East, had seven points and two steals in a 67-50 victory over Rose-Hulman on Wednesday.

The Grizzlies are 11-5.

Local trio score win

Hanover forward Callie Wilder, a freshman from Jennings County, finished with six points, four rebounds, two steals and a block in an 86-49 win over Defiance on Saturday.

Kat Norman, a sophomore from North, added six points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal in the win. Liz Tynan, a sophomore from North, had two points, three rebounds and five assists.

The Panthers are 10-6.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Gross nets double-double

Olivet Nazarene center Alex Gross tallied 22 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks in a 101-73 win over Judson on Wednesday.

Gross, a sophomore from Hauser, added nine points and 11 rebounds and four blocks in a 79-56 win over Saint Xavier on Saturday.

The Tigers are 20-2.

King starts in win

Army forward Alex King, a junior from North, finished with 14 points and seven rebounds in a 94-74 win over Lafayette on Wednesday.

The Black Knights are 9-10.

Williams wins two

Hanover forward Kevin Williams recorded 18 points, four rebounds and four assists in an 88-76 over Defiance on Saturday.

Williams, a senior from East, added six points and six rebounds in a 66-53 win over Anderson on Wednesday.

The Panthers are 13-4.

Chitty suffers first loss

Bellarmine guard Parker Chitty, a senior from East, scored five points and saw his team’s unbeaten streak come to an end on Jan. 20 with an 81-76 loss to University of Indianapolis.

Chitty then posted one rebound and two assists in a 79-74 loss to Southwest Baptist on Thursday, but bounced back with three points and four assists in a 78-65 win over Drury on Saturday.

The Knights are 15-2.

Clark wins award

University of Indianapolis offensive lineman Zach Clark was named the Offensive Most Valuable Freshman of the Year at the program’s year-end awards banquet.

The Greyhounds finished the 2019 season 9-2.
