A local man was arrested early Wednesday morning after he reportedly threw drugs out of his vehicle after refusing to stop for Columbus police officers.

At 12:30 a.m., CPD offices attempted to stop a vehicle for a minor violation near State Street and McKinley Avenue, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The driver of the vehicle, who was later identified as Michael L. Lawles, 53, of Columbus, refused to pull over for several blocks and began throwing items out of his vehicle during the pursuit, Harris said.

Lawles stopped his vehicle a short time later and was taken into custody without incident.

While searching Lawles’ vehicle, the officers located methamphetamine on the both the passenger floorboard and the driver’s seat, Harris said. Officers also located a bag of marijuana that Lawles threw from his vehicle during the pursuit.

Lawles was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was being held on the following preliminary charges: Possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and resisting law enforcement in a vehicle.
