United Way to offer tax filing help

United Way of Bartholomew County is offering free income tax filing help for those living or working in Bartholomew County through the VITA and AARP programs from Feb. 5 through April 8.

Those who qualify for the program may schedule a free tax filing appointment at 812-375-2216. Reservations will be taken on a first-come, first serve basis.

Last year’s Free Income Tax Assistance programs served more than 1,000 local residents and collectively saved residents more than $100,000 in taxpayer fees.

The programs are offered to individuals who make $60,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly or those with limited English-speaking capabilities who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

IRS-certified volunteers provide confidential and secure basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing for those who qualify. The volunteers also make sure that filers receive qualified tax credits.

The appointments will be at the United Way headquarters and Mill Race Center, both in Columbus.
